A Day In The Life of a Substitute

Substituting offers flexibility and variety—no two days are the same.

Most substitutes start by browsing open assignments through a web-based absence management system. This is where teacher absences are posted, allowing you to choose assignments based on grade level, subject, school location, and the days you want to work.

Most schools pay about $100 - $150 per daily assignment, with additional pay for longer-term assignments.

On assignment days, substitutes usually arrive about 30 minutes before the start time to check in at the front office. School staff often provide a quick overview of the day, including any special activities or procedures, and help you get settled into the classroom. You may also be introduced to nearby teachers who can offer support if needed.

Your role is simple but important: keep students safe, engaged, and learning. You’ll typically follow a lesson plan left by the teacher, along with any specific classroom or school guidelines.

Each day can look a little different—you might lead a high school science lab, support early readers in an elementary class, or guide a creative middle school project. Most school days run 6 to 7.5 hours and include a lunch break and often a planning period. It’s a rewarding experience filled with meaningful moments—and always a story to take with you.

Most school days are about 6 to 7½ hours long, with time for lunch and often an open period. No matter what, you'll always have a story to tell from a memorable moment of the day.
